Samuel Ross Stewart, 85, passed away at home surrounded by those who loved him Dec. 16, 2017. Ross, as he was known to family and friends, was born May 22, 1932, in Robbinsville, North Carolina. He loved to share stories of his childhood growing up as one of nine children. He made frequent trips back to his beloved mountains to see family and pursue his passion for trout fishing. He had a quiet sense of humor, and his greatest pleasure was spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ross served in the Navy and was a veteran of the Korean War serving aboard the USS Roosevelt and USS Oriskany. He was employed by Reynolds Metals for 30 years and was a member of Rogersville Church of Christ.
Mr. Stewart’s visitation will be held at Rogersville Funeral Home today from 1-2 p.m. with funeral service immediately following. Alex Bayes and Windell Gann will be officiating. Pallbearers will be Sam Williams, Freddie McConnell, Matthew Davis, Will Stewart, Daniel Tucker, and Blake Tidwell. Honorary pallbearers will be grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Katy Stewart; brothers, Russell, Henry, Gerald, Perry, and Ray Stewart; and sister, Betty Stewart Small.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 61 years, Faye Tucker Stewart; sons, Randall (Jean) Tucker and Sam (Shawna) Stewart; daughters, Tammy (Tim) Williams and Amy (Jeff) Mason; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and sisters, Marselle Tallent and Nell (Frank) James.
