Samuel Marchbanks Finney II, age 83 of Belvidere, passed away on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at Highpoint Health Medical Center in Winchester. A native of Franklin County, he was born in Sewanee on July 4, 1941, to the late Louis Riley and Margaret (Morgan) Finney. Samuel served his country in the United States Air Force. He then worked at AEDC in the Design Department, retiring after a career spanning forty years. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and dirt bike riding, as well as rebuilding cars. He enjoyed the sounds of music and could play anything with a string but never mastered the fiddle. Morning breakfast at Hardee’s each day meant catching up with familiar friends and making new ones as he never met a stranger. His loving and joyful nature combined with his contagious laughter will be missed by all who knew and loved him. A devoted Christian, he was a member of Cowan Church of Christ, as well as a fifty-year member of the Masonic Lodge. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Doreen Brent; brothers, Roger Finney and Carl Finney; father and mother-in-law, Floyd and Evelyn Miller; and brother-in-law, Herman Miller. Samuel is survived by his loving wife of sixty-four years, Doris Jean Finney; children, Sam (Marla) Finney III and Steven (Tonya) Finney; grandchildren, Sam (Amber) Finney IV, Mason Finney, Zachary Toups, Steven Finney II, Claire Finney, Lydia Bowman, and Samantha Bowman; great-grandchildren, Sam Finney V and Eloise Finney; sister, Diane Rathman; sisters-in-law, Norma Stephens, Kathy Matthews, and Dana Jayne; brother-in-law, Troy Miller; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 5-8 pm on Monday, April 14, 2025, at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, in the Chapel of Moore-Cortner Funeral Home with Bro. Gordon Matthews officiating. Interment will follow at Eastern Star Cemetery.
