Sally Jane YorkSally Jane [Scott]York, age 84, peacefully passed away on February 26, 2025 in Albertville, Alabama, after an extended illness.

Sally was born on January 3, 1941 to Fred and Myrtle Scott of Guntersville. She attended Guntersville Elementary and Marshall County High School, and married her husband of 67 years, Reverend Billy York, shortly after finishing school.

Sally earned her B.S.Ed in K-12 Special Education from The University of Alabama. She also earned advanced degrees in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from The University of Alabama, Birmingham and an Educational Specialist degree in School Administration from Jacksonville State University. Sally spent 41 years teaching in Tuscaloosa County, Decatur City, Anniston City, Hoover City, and Guntersville City Schools, as well as working for the Alabama State Department of Education and STI Educational Services. Sally was passionate about her career as an educator, and loved her students as if they were her own. She was blessed to have worked for administrators who appreciated her dedication to educating the whole child, and was honored to have been named the Alternate Alabama State Teacher of the Year in 2002.

Additionally, Sally cherished her role as a pastor’s wife alongside her husband Billy. Together, they dedicated 50 years of their lives to pastoring congregations across the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church. She willingly answered the call to participate in the ministries of the church, and her hospitality often extended to organizing pastor’s wives for events at meetings and conferences. Her servant heart was a living example of I Peter 4:10, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace.”

But no responsibility gave Sally more joy than being a Mother and a Grandmother to her children and grandchildren. She taught her family responsibility, to show kindness and respect to all, filled her home with unconditional love, and made all who came to her home feel welcome. Her children and grandchildren were a source of pride for her, and she took great joy in supporting and attending their many activities and recognizing their accomplishments. Sally was an excellent cook and made sure that everyone in her home was always fed and never walked away from the table hungry.

Sally is preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Myrtle Scott of Guntersville; her brothers Fred, Jr. and Eugene [Ruth] Scott of Guntersville; her daughter, Beverly York of Guntersville; and her daughter-in-law, Carla York of Guntersville.

She is survived by her husband, Reverend Billy York of Albertville; her son and grandson Mark and Jake York of Guntersville; her son Matt York of Guntersville; her grandsons Zack Prater [Taylor] of Charlotte, North Carolina; Chase Prater of Birmingham; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial Services were held at Henryville Methodist Church on Sunday, March 2nd at 2:30 with the family receiving friends after the service.

In lieu of flowers, Sally and her family request that donations be made to Shepherd’s Cove Hospice [Albertville, Alabama], The Lake Junaluska Assembly Annual Fund [Lake Junaluska, North Carolina], The Shining Stars Choir [Guntersville, Alabama], or a Church of your choice.

Sally will be deeply missed by her family, her close friends, and all who knew her and whose lives she touched, butwe are all thankful that she is at peace with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
