Ruth Myer McKenzie – Obituary

RuthRuth Myer McKenzie, 85, of Decatur passed away Sunday, July 28, 2013.

Ruth was born January 24, 1928 in Birmingham. She was a graduate of Ramsay High School and the University of Alabama where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. She lived in Birmingham 40 years before moving to St. Louis in 1968 and then to Decatur in 1972 where she taught at Oak Park Middle School, Eastwood and Walter Jackson Elementary Schools. She was a Chamber Commodore, a member of Friends of the Library, Decatur Culture Club, Saturday Night Supper Club and, Carnegie Visual Arts Center. She was a volunteer for the Community Free Clinic, Princess Theatre, and PACT.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Haydn and Julia Myer; and a sister, Martha Ann Myer. She is survived by her husband of 63-plus years, Robert W. McKenzie; daughters, Terri Baxter (Rice) of Birmingham, Julie Dailey (Tim) and Lucy Lockley (Richard) of St. Louis and M.M. Tweedy of Decatur; her twin sister, Peggy Trechsel of Birmingham; grandchildren, Robert and Sarah Lockley, Katy Mac and Liza Lee Tweedy and Jordan Baxter (Jill); and great-granddaughters, Kennady and Colbie Baxter.

Visitation will be held at Annunciation of the Lord Catholic Church today at 10 a.m. followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. The family wishes to thank Dr. Scott Matthews, Caregivers of the Valley, and Hospice of the Valley who provided loving care with great compassion.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Annunciation of the Lord Catholic Church or Hospice of the Valley.
