Royce Slate, of Montgomery, passed away Thursday afternoon, Nov. 19, 2015, at the age of 84.
A private burial will take place in Hartselle. Friends and family are invited to a celebration of his life on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2015, at 1 p.m. at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Montgomery. The family will visit and share remembrances before and after the service.
Royce served in the army and graduated from Auburn University. He served the disabled people of Alabama for 26 years in the State of Alabama Department of Vocational Rehabilitation. He enjoyed wood working all his life and became well known as a dulcimer builder and player; his craftsmanship was recognized in many ways.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Irene Slate, of Hartselle, AL; and brothers, Ray Slate, Ralph (Ann) Slate, and Rudolph Slate.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Darlene, two daughters, Angela (Kreg) Sherbine and Celia (Richard) Powell; and four grandchildren, Maggie, Jackson, and Russell Powell and Nathaniel Sherbine, all of Montgomery. He is also survived by siblings Reba (Roy) Wallace, Robert (Judy) Slate ,and Margie Crocker; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial gifts be made to the music ministry of Aldersgate United Methodist Church or another charitable organization.
