Roy Hanks – Obituary

Roy Hanks, 78, passed away Saturday. He was born in Tipton County, TN to William Marley and Nora Mae Hanks. Roy received an Engineering degree from Auburn University, becoming the first person in his family to graduate from college. He worked at Convair in Ft Worth, TX and Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City before beginning a long career with the Army Missile Command, where he was known for his work on the MLRS project. Roy later worked at Nichols Research. After retirement, he enjoyed a budding career as a hybridizer and major digger at the Monte Vedra Daylily Garden.

Roy was preceded in death by their daughter Valerie. He is survived by his wife, Dot; daughter Lisa Hanks Phelps and husband Jack; grandchildren Paige and Colin Phelps and grand dog Trina.

Visitation will be from 10:30 am till noon Tuesday, May 27 at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow with Rev. Joe Estes officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Donations may be made to Trinity Place Alzheimer’s Day Care through Trinity Methodist Church. The family would like to express their appreciation to the wonderful caregivers at Huntsville Hospital.
