DECATUR-Officers from the Decatur Police Department attempted to make a routine traffic stop which turned into an armed conflict. Here is the statement from the Decatur Police:
“SYNOPSIS OF OFFENSE & ARREST:
On 7/19/2015 at approx 3:26am, Ofc Todd Walker was in his marked police car waiting at a red light when a SUV pulled up beside him and made a left turn on red.
Walker attempted to stop the vehicle, which fled, leading Ofc Walker and another marked unit on a pursuit.
The suspect, identified as Tyris Lewis, pulled into Poplar Ct (a cul-de-sac) and stopped. Ofcs Walker, Ferguson and Rutherford began to perform a felony traffic stop on the vehicle. Ofc Walker had his issued firearm out of the holster pointed towards the vehicle.
The male then got out of his vehicle and pointed his hands at Ofc Walker like he was holding a gun.
Ofc Walker realized the male was not armed, so he did not fire his weapon. The male rapidly started towards Walker, still holding his hands out like he was armed. Walker began retreating from the male, while attempting to put his issued weapon in it’s holster.
The male closed the distance between himself and Ofc Walker, and grabbed Walker. Walker was knocked to the ground.
During the ensuing fight, the male was able to get his hands on Walker’s weapon. After a lengthy struggle over control of the gun, the other Officers were able to get Lewis off of Ofc Walker. Walker was treated for his injuries at Decatur Morgan Hospital and released.
Lewis was charged with numerous traffic and misdemeanor offenses. Detectives of the Violent Crimes Unit charged Lewis with Assault 2nd Degree and Disarming a Police Officer. Both are Class C Felonies.”
