Roger L. Burdge, age 83, Haleyville, AL. passed away Sunday April 5, 2020.
Private service to be held
Roger moved to Haleyville following his graduation from then, Florence State Teachers College. He began his career with Kayser-Roth. Over the years he worked production and sales in the Mobile Home Industry, and Lumber Business.
Roger would latter attend International Bible College in Florence. Following graduation, he preached in several states throughout the Southeast. While in Texas he began working with the prison ministry, which eventually lead him to Parchman, Mississippi, where he was Chaplain over the Drug & Alcohol Unit, as well as counselor.
Upon his return to Haleyville, he became the founder of Freedom Hills Community Center, which has become a necessary program for addicts in our communities. He loved this work, and the clients loved him. Freedom Hills will continue with this much needed program. Roger also worked with DHR, judges, probation officers and lawyers for his clients. This program will continue.
Roger is also the author of an Overcome Addiction Book, Riding in the Wind, the life of an inmate once housed at the Mississippi State Prison, Parchman, MS. and Echoes from the Row, the life and death of an inmate in Huntsville, TX. He was also in the process of writing a book relating to his life, for his children, grandchildren and greats, and further generations to come.
Roger is survived by his wife, Gracie Tedford Burdge; son Jeff Burdge (Donna) and Beth Fuller (Ricky); grandsons, Josh Burdge, Blake Burdge, Reece Fuller and Carson Fuller; great grands, Jacob Burdge, Brennen Burdge and Bryson Burdge; brother, Ron Burdge (Linda).
Roger is preceded in death by his first wife, Janis Howell Burdge; brother Dr. David Burdge; parents, Everett and Amy Burdge and Dorothy Dircks Shimkus.
