Roger H. Moss, 86, of Decatur, passed away on October 29, 2014, at Decatur Morgan Hospital. Funeral services will be Monday, November 3, 2014, at 3 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church with Reverend Gary Formby officiating and Roselawn Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Decatur City Cemetery.
Mr. Moss was born October 9, 1928, in Benchly, TX, to Samuel O. and Edna Moss. He retired from Colonial Pipeline Co. after 40 years and 8 months in 1988. He raised quarter horses and cattle. He loved nature, hunting, music, horses, fishing and flying airplanes. He served in the Coast Guard Reserve during World War II. He studied business at McKenzie-Baldwin Business College. He was the “Justice of the peace” in Mazon, Illinois in the 1950’s. He also served on the town council and rescue squad in Moundville, AL in the 1970’s and 1980’s.
Mr. Moss was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Rebekah Moss-Fletcher; three brothers and 3 sisters.
Mr. Moss is survived by his wife of 62 years, June Watchinski Moss; son, Roger H. Moss, Jr., M.D. (Anne); and daughter, Patricia J. Moss, J.D., all of Decatur; sister, Ethel Faye Goodwin of Bryan, TX; grandchildren, Kristi Moss, Roger H. “Beau” Moss III, Forrest S. Fletcher and Hunter Moss Fletcher. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Randy McGregor, Gavin Whatley, Dylan Jackson, Jerry Thrasher, Mike Poovey, Beau Moss, Hunter Fletcher and Forrest Fletcher.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Lynn Thrasher, Carolyn Poovey, Sharon Whatley, Frances Evans, Ann Hicks, Eleanor Powell, Dr. Charles Prickett, Dr. Joseph Back, Dr. Sammy Bechdach, Dr. Traci McCormack, Dr. Luis Villanueva and the Decatur Morgan Hospital ICU/CICU staff.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Central United Methodist Church, Clearview Cancer Institute and the Library for the Blind.
