Robert Turner Hughes, 84, made his final transition to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, May 11, 2016. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mattie L. Hughes. He leaves to cherish his memory and to carry on his legacy, his son, Michael K. (Debra); daughters, Yolanda D. (Yodie) and Nanci E.; grandchildren, Michael L., Turner A. and Elizabeth A.; brother, Fred Hughes; sisters, Augusta Harden and Thelma Everhart; tacit daughter, Tori Bailey; sisters-in-law, Patricia Echols (George) and Barbara Murray (Vernon); and a myriad of nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins, fraternity brothers and numerous mentees.
He was a life member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., a Kiwanis Hixson Fellow, a U.S. Army veteran, a graduate of Alabama A&M University (BS) and Tuskegee Institute (MS). He was a life member of the NAACP, served on numerous boards, including but not limited to, the National School Board Association, March of Dimes, Florence City Board of Education, chairman and member, Salvation Army, Alabama A&M University board of trustees and the state of Alabama and Lauderdale County Democratic Executive Committees, Muscle Shoals Alumni Association and the United Way of Northwest Alabama.
Family hour will be Sunday, May 15, 2016, at Thompson and Son Funeral Home, 415 S. Poplar St., Florence, AL 35630, from 4-6 p.m. CST. The Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. memorial service will follow the family hour. The home going services will be Monday, May 16, 2016, at 1 p.m. CST, at Emory Chapel CME Church, 7079 County Road 13, Aliceville, AL 35443, with internment to follow at the Hughes Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to the NAACP Tri-County Branch, the March Of Dimes or the United Way of Northwest Alabama.
