The youngest of five siblings, he was drafted into the Korean War at the age of 20, serving in the Quartermaster Corps. Upon returning to Scottsboro, he met the love of his life, Fannie Ruth Wilkerson, and they were married in 1955. After a long career in numerous jobs around Scottsboro, he retired in 1996 and turned his attention to his neighborhood and could often be seen riding his bicycle to help manage his diabetes while checking on his neighbors and checking the progress in the new subdivision development called The Meadows where his father once farmed. Others remember him in his little pickup truck with his neighbor’s big black dog, Buddy, riding in the back since Buddy had decided to adopt him as his friend.

Known as Uncle Howard, Mr. Howard, Papa Clemons, and Bop Bop to some, he surrounded himself with so many friends and family over the years. He was an amazing person with a big smile, full of life, humility, compassion, and willing to help in anyway he could. He will be missed by many.
