The funeral service for Robert Eugene “Gene” Melton, age 69 of Wadley, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 11, 2018 at the Mt. Gilead Community Church with Pastor Mike Hanners and Pastor Larry Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery.
Mr. Melton passed away on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at his home. He was born in LaGrange, GA but lived most of his life in Clay County. Mr. Melton was a 1967 graduate of Mellow Valley High School where he was a member of the basketball team. He worked for a number of years as an over-the-road truck driver for the Mohawk Carpet Company and was a member and deacon at Mt. Gilead Community Church. Gene had a special love for his children and grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them, especially playing basketball.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Betty E. Melton of Wadley; two daughters: Ann Melton of Wadley and Lynn Sherrer (Kim) of Oxford; one son, Jody Melton (Crystal) of Wadley; one brother, Edward Melton (Pat) of Wadley; seven grandchildren: Melanie Leanne Moon, Dylan Elisha Moon, Hannah Blair Shaddix, Shannon Faith Moon, William Sebastian Melton, Zoe Virginia Melton and Anna Brooke; and five great-grandchildren: Isabella Grace Shaddix, Lola Rose Moon, Parker Camden Shaddix, Lexi Charlotte Shaddix and Audrey Jaylene Moon . He was preceded in death by his parents: Henry Jewel Melton and Dorothy Virginia Caldwell Melton.
Jody Melton, Kim Sherrer, Dylan Moon, Troy Melton, Jackson Shaddix and Jimmy Brand will serve as pallbearers. Edward Melton will serve as honorary pallbearer.
The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville on Monday, December 10, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Mr. Melton will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to service time on Tuesday.
