Robert “Bob” McDowell Hammond, 85, passed away on Wednesday, January 30, 2024.

He was the son of Mildred Whitson and Clyde Hammond of Birmingham, AL. Bob graduated from Auburn University (he actually was the last graduating class of the Alabama Polytechnic Institute) with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and from the University of Central Florida with a master’s degree in Industrial Engineering and Management Systems. He was a professional Engineer licensed to practice in Florida and worked his entire professional life at the Pratt Whitney division of United Technologies Corporation in West Palm Beach, Florida. There, he was involved in research and development of jet and rocket engines for government applications. Bob retired in 1993.

Bob was married to Lynne Brooks for 54 years. They were parents of three children: Linda, Rob, Jr., and Sharon. He was also the father of two other sons: Scott and Bill. He has numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bob was a lifelong Southern Baptist and currently was a member of the Whitesburg Baptist Church in Huntsville, where he was involved in many activities. He was interested in genealogy for most of his adult life, which led him to his membership in various lineage societies. These included: the Sons of the American Revolution, the Society of the War of 1812, the Society of the Descendants of Washington’s Army at Valley Forge, Sons of Confederate Veterans, and the First Families of the Tennessee Valley. He has proven direct descent from 20 ancestors who have been determined to have been patriots of the Revolutionary War effort.

A visitation will be held on Monday, February 5, from 10:00-11:00AM at the Whitesburg Baptist Church (South Campus) with the service following at 11:00AM. A private interment with the family will take place after the service.
