Dr. Robert Baker Hale, Jr., 79, of Huntsville, passed away on October 28, 2016. Dr. Hale “Bob” was predeceased by his parents Robert Baker Hale, Sr. and Dorothy McCarthy Hale.
Dr. Hale received his Bachelor of Arts degree and his medical degree from Vanderbilt University. He served his internship and residency at Vanderbilt and Duke University specializing in Pediatrics and was certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. He served as a Captain in the United States Army Medical Corp prior to moving to Huntsville in 1968. Dr. Hale retired in 1998 after 30 years of practice with Huntsville Pediatric Associates.
Dr. Hale was a member of several professional associations, including The Tennessee Valley Pediatric Society, Huntsville Hospital and Medical Center staffs and Division Chief, Huntsville Academy of Medicine, Madison County Pediatric Board of Trustees, and Alabama Academy of Pediatrics Board of Trustees.
He served his community on the Huntsville Achievement School Board, medical advisor to the Muscular Dystrophy Society, President of the UAH Child Health Improvement Program, UAH Medical School volunteer faculty, Downtown Rescue Mission Board, Huntsville Association Pastoral Care Board, and Carlton Cove Retirement Community Board. He was an active member of The Episcopal Church of the Nativity and served on the Church Vestry and as a Stephens minister and leader. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling and playing bridge.
He is survived by his wife of thirty-five years, Shirley Richardson Hale; sisters, Elizabeth Hale Barnett (Crawford), Dorothy Hale Carter (Charles) and Laura Hale Franks (Lee); seven children, and was “GrandBob” to nineteen grandchildren: Robert Baker Hale III and Jackie (Baker, Griffin), Porter Tull Hale and Susie (Brennan, Connor, Nolan), Nelson Holland Hale and Cathy (Drew, Austin) and Anne Hale Helmly and Dan (Brandon, Megan) ; stepchildren and grandchildren are Mark Leberte and Kristi (McLain, Angie, Emmy, Holly, Jackie), Lori Leberte Bates and Steve(Blair, Samantha), Lisa Leberte Del Greco (Erica, Trey, Derrick); and great-grandchild, Bradford Lennon Roche.
Visitation will be held at The Episcopal Church of Nativity on Tuesday, November 1st from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. The service will be at 3:00 pm at the Church followed by a private burial in the Church courtyard.
