SHEFFIELD-The Ritz Theatre is getting ready for its upcoming theatre season with a Stage-to-Screen film series, featuring movie adaptations of popular Broadway musicals. The screenings will take place each Thursday in May at 7 p.m., with Les Misérables on May 5, Chicago on May 12, The Phantom of the Opera on May 19, and Rent on May 26. Tickets are $10 each (or $30 for a series pass) and are available at tennesseevalleyarts.org or at the door.
This series is a celebration of stage musicals, so the audience is invited to sing along to their favorite songs during the screenings. Each film will be introduced by a member of The Ritz’s upcoming musical production of The Drowsy Chaperone. The films will be shown on the big screen in the historic theatre. Concessions– including fresh popcorn, sodas, candy, wine, and beer–will be available, and doors open at 6:30 p.m.
The series launches on Thursday, May 5, at 7 p.m. with Les Misérables, the 2012 adaptation directed by Tom Hooper and starring Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway, who won the Academy Award for her role. The second film is Chicago on Thursday, May 12, at 7 p.m. Directed by Rob Marshall, this 2002 adaptation stars Renée Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Richard Gere. It won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and Zeta-Jones won Best Supporting Actress.
On Thursday, May 19, at 7 p.m. the film will be 2004’s The Phantom of the Opera, directed by
Joel Schumacher and starring Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum. The series will conclude on Thursday, May 26, at 7 p.m. with Rent. Directed by Chris Columbus, this 2005 adaptation stars six of the original Broadway cast members reprising their roles, including Anthony Rapp, Jesse L. Martin, and Idina Menzel.
