Richard Smallwood, 81, of Tuscumbia, passed away peacefully at UAB Hospital on Thursday, January 31, 2019, surrounded by his two daughters, Tina Tomsik and Sheree Miller, and his very special friend, Mary Hightower.

Richard was a retired member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 320. Richard was loved dearly by his family. He enjoyed his classic country music record collection, rebuilding classic cars and spending time at the beach. He also enjoyed watching and feeding birds in his numerous bird feeders spread throughout his yard. His many funny quips and sense of humor will be missed.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Clary and Ethel Warner Smallwood of Tuscumbia; brother, William Smallwood of Lansing Michigan; sisters, Sara Olive and Angie Hovater of Tuscumbia.

He is survived by his daughters, Tina Tomsik (David) of Muscle Shoals, Sheree Miller of Tuscaloosa; his sister, Janice S. Alexander of Gallatin, Tennessee; grandchildren, Andrew Hargett and Alyssa Hargett (Whitney) of Tuscaloosa, and Alexandra Tomsik Alexander of Sheffield and his great-grandchildren, Leah Hargett and Lucas Hargett of Tuscaloosa.

Richard wishes to spend eternity among the oceans, so his ashes will be spread at the beach and mountains at a later date. There will be a private service celebrating Richard’s life for immediate family. Those wishing to honor his life can do so by donating to the American Heart Association in his name
