Richard Paul Johnston, age 88, of Coker, AL, formerly of Guntersville, Alabama, passed away Tuesday afternoon, June 17, 2025 at Hospice of West Alabama in Tuscaloosa, AL. Richard was born in Monroeville, Pennsylvania on December 10, 1936. Richard graduated from high school and pursued higher education by earning a master’s degree. His professional journey flourished as an engineer with General Electric. Richard was married to Susette Lawrence Johnston and was a member of the Warrenton Methodist Church.
Richard was a man of remarkable talents and passions. His interests involved the skies, seas, and land. He served his country with honor in the US Air Force; but aviation was not merely a career for Richard but a lifelong love. Owning his own plane, he embraced the freedom and adventure of flight. Richard was drawn to the water as well; he captained his 50-foot yacht and navigated waters with the same precision he brought to flying and engineering.
Richard’s connection to the land was just as intense as it was with the skies and water. He cared for his farm and horses with as much commitment and passion as he did in his other interests. His life was one of accomplishment, exploration, and deep appreciation for the world around him.
He will be remembered not only for his achievements but for his boundless spirit and the inspiration he provided to those who knew and loved him. His family and friends carry forward his legacy of striving for greatness in every endeavor. Family Richard leaves behind to value and cherish memories include his wife, Susette Lawrence Johnston; sons, Ricky Johnston (Julie) and Mike Johnston (Vonda); stepson, Seth Moore; stepdaughter, Sarah Price (Ross); brother, Milton Johnston (Carole); and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Richard was “PapPap” to a very special granddaughter, Harper Price, daughter of Ross and Sarah, for the past 20 months. From the moment Harper was born, she found a cherished place in his lap, and his face would light up whenever she came to visit. Not a day passed without Richard asking, “When is that grandbaby coming?” Harper brought him immeasurable joy and filled his days with love and laughter.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Nancy Stroschein Johnston; and his daughter, Nancy Marie Johnston.
Services for Richard will be Sunday, June 22, 2025 at Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel in Arab, Alabama. Family, friends and guests will gather for a visitation beginning at 1:00pm until the funeral service begins at 2:00pm. Reverand Vicky Mann will officiate.
