Reuben Noah Carroll, a cherished family patriarch, respected educator, and decorated veteran, passed away peacefully at his home in Huntsville, Alabama, on December 28, 2023, at the venerable age of 102. Born on December 22, 1921, in Arab, Alabama, Reuben’s life was marked by dedication, service, and a profound appreciation for the natural world.
Reuben’s early years in Arab instilled in him a love for learning and a spirit of resilience, qualities that would define his life. After completing his education, he answered the call of duty and served with honor in the US Army Air Corps during World War II. His service to his country was a source of great pride, and he often reflected on the experiences that shaped him into the courageous man he became.
Following his military service, Reuben pursued his passion for teaching, earning a bachelor’s degree from Athens College. He then went on to inspire countless students as a machine shop instructor at Calhoun Community College. His wisdom and hands-on approach to education left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of being his student.
Reuben’s love for the great outdoors was evident to all who knew him. An avid camper and fisherman, he found solace and joy in the tranquility of nature. His adventurous spirit and deep respect for the environment were qualities he passed on to his family and friends.
Those who knew Reuben best would describe him as wise, handy, and courageous. He approached life’s challenges with a quiet strength and a steady hand. His wisdom was sought after by many, and his ability to fix anything that needed repair was nothing short of remarkable.
Reuben’s legacy is carried on by his loving family. He is survived by his sons, Barry Lynn Carroll of Vinemont, Alabama, and Robert Neil Carroll of Huntsville, Alabama; his daughter, Rhonda Ritter of Huntsville, Alabama; five grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren, who will continue to honor his memory by living out the values he embodied.
Reuben was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Annie D. Carroll, with whom he shared a life full of love and partnership. He was also preceded by his parents, Simon Peter Carroll and Mattie Alice Cowart Carroll; his brothers, Alton, Joseph, and Jack Carroll; his sister Lois Blake and Ora Isbell; and two grandchildren, who all held a special place in his heart.
As we bid farewell to Reuben Noah Carroll, we reflect on a life well-lived—a life of commitment to family, service to country, and a profound connection to the natural world. His memory will be a beacon of courage, wisdom, and love for generations to come. Reuben’s presence will be deeply missed, but the impact of his century-spanning life will continue to resonate with all who had the honor of knowing him.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at Hampton Cove Funeral Home Chapel at 2:00 PM, with burial at Hampton Cove Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until service time. Serving as pallbearers will be Taylor, Levi, Jaycob, Elijah, Matt, and Ray.
