Redge Cromwell Swing, 80, passed away on October 30, 2022, going peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior. Redge was a lifelong resident of Huntsville, growing up on Locust Street. He was born on December 24, 1941. He graduated from Huntsville High School in 1960 where he met the love of his life, Carolyn Oliver. He went on to graduate from Auburn University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Design. He returned to his beloved Huntsville and he and Carolyn married in April 1966. Redge was a loving husband, proud father, doting grandfather, and fierce friend. He was a man of deep religious faith and a devoted parishioner of Good Shepherd Catholic Church. Oh, how he loved to spend time with his family, especially on Auburn football Saturdays, tailgating with family and friends. He loved the lake, teaching all his grandkids to fish, as his father did before him; a hook in the ear or finger never stopped them. He was a beautiful example of what it meant to be a Christian, a husband, a father, and a friend.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Pauline Swing, and his brother, Joe Rodney Swing. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Carolyn Oliver Swing; two sons, Scott Swing (Susan), and Jeff Swing (Kathy); and daughter, Susan Owen (Rob). He also leaves behind five grandchildren that were the apples of his eye, Sally Swing, Joe Swing, Campbell Swing, Caroline Owen, and Will Owen.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 12 noon Wednesday, November 2, Holy Spirit Catholic Church with the funeral service following at noon. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made to First Stop, 206 Stokes St., NW, Huntsville, AL 35805, or the Boys and Girls Club of North Alabama, 103 Abington Avenue NW, Huntsville, AL 35801. Both organizations were very dear to Redge. Often, Redge would come home from work without his coat. When asked what happened, he would sheepishly grin and say he gave it to a friend, and you could never find an umbrella. He gave those away quicker than Carolyn could replace them.
