On Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, a record-breaking 1,238ย University of Alabama at Birmingham(UAB) freshmen will move into their new homes in Blazer, Camp and Denman residence halls on campus.
That is an increase from the 1,130 freshmen assigned to rooms last year. At least 1,275 upperclassmen are set to live in UAB housing this year, compared to 1,219 last year. A total of 2,513 students will live on campus this year. That is the largest number of freshmen living on campus and the largest total residential population UAB has had, a record UAB has broken for seven straight years, according to UAB Director of Academic and Student Services Carolyn Farley. Nearly 1,800 freshmen are enrolled for the fall semester.
With the growth in demand, UAB has expanded its master lease with University House apartments from 55 to 100 beds to house interested students. UAB continues to hold a master lease with Crowne on 10th for 26 beds, which are full at this time.
Hundreds of volunteers representing UAB student organizations will help the new class of freshmen move into residence halls. Volunteers will provide the physical labor by unloading cars and moving everything into the rooms for the students and their parents. Arrivals will be staggered by floor to reduce the time people spend outside in the heat. Upperclassmen moved into the halls earlier in the week.
Dozens of staffers from various UAB departments will be on hand to greet the new students and take care of school business, including financial aid, parking, student accounting, advising and on-stop services. A first aid station will be on site.
The freshmen campus residence halls are Blazer Hall, 920 16th St. South, and Camp Hall, 1516 10th Ave. South, just south of Ninth Avenue South and the UAB Campus Recreation Center, which is located at 1501 University Blvd. Denman Hall is at 1604 9th Ave. South.
