SHEFFIELD – The lawyer for suspended Chief of Police, Greg Ray, issued a media release late Friday stating that his client has received “overwhelming support” from area residents. Florence attorney Tony Hughes sent the letter to area media on behalf of Ray after an afternoon-long meeting following Ray’s dismissal of duties.

The letter reads:

“Chief Ray and his family want to thank the citizens of the City of Sheffield and the

surrounding areas for the overwhelming support they have received. Chief Ray has served the
citizens of Sheffield for over 20 years and looks forward to the opportunity to continue to serve
this community as their Chief of Police. At this time, we are gathering information and are
looking forward to addressing these allegations before the Civil Service Board.”

Ray was suspended without pay Friday morning for as yet unspecified reasons. City officials have told The Quad-Cities Daily that all of their reasoning to fire Ray will be presented at the appropriate time and place. That will presumably be at a Civil Service Board hearing which Ray must request within five business days of the suspension.

Interesting story……Let’s wait and see what is presented at the Civil Service Board by both parties.
