Rachel Holladay Slate – Obituary

Funeral service for Rachel Holladay Slate, 87, will be Thursday, July 26, 2018 at 4:30 PM at Peck Funeral Home Chapel with Paul Cheshier and Mark Nix officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing. Burial will be in Herring Cemetery.  Visitation will be Thursday, July 26, 2018 from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Peck Funeral Home.

Mrs. Slate died on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at Grandview Medical Center.  She was born August 19, 1930, in Morgan County to Herman Holladay and Lois Sandlin Holladay.  Mrs. Slate was an accomplished musician, playing and teaching lessons on many instruments, including the piano, organ and accordian.  With the Accordian being her favorite instrument to play, she was a member of the Accordian Association.  She, as a student, started the Morgan County High School Marching Band and it remains an Award Winning band to this day.  She was the best cook, a wonderful christian lady, the spiritual matriarch of her family, and a prayer warrior. She was not above writing the most loving, inspirational and sympathic letters to those who were suffering and experiencing difficult times.  She and her husband, Joe, established three scholarships in perpetuity for needy students: one at University of Alabama and two at Athens State College. She also entered a contest and won for naming Hartselle the “City of Southern Hospitality”.

She was preceded in death by her grandson: Dustin Slate and her parents.

Daryl Slate (Shonna W.)

Three Grandchildren:
Marc Allan Slate,
Hugheston Slate and
Madison Slate

Two Great Grandchildren:
Silas Slate and
Laney Slate

Pallbearers will be Family & Friends.
