R. C. Smith, age 88, of Muscle Shoals, died Wednesday, May 14, 2014.
His family will receive friends today 10 a.m. until noon at Highland Park Baptist Church. Funeral service will follow with James Taylor and Brett Pitman officiating. Burial will be in Colbert Memorial Gardens.
R. C. was a native of Colbert County and a member of Highland Park Baptist Church. He graduated from Florence State Teachers College (UNA) and the University of Pittsburg, Graduate School of Public Health. He was briefly employed as a teacher in Colbert County schools and was a chemist with Reynolds Metals. He retired after 30 years as an industrial hygienist in the occupational health program of TVA. He was a radio operator in the U. S. Navy on destroyers during World War II and the Korean War.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Sara Anderson Smith, his parents, Ralph and Annie Smith, brother, Ottis H. Smith, and sister, Lena Tolbert.
He is survived by his wife, Betty D. Smith, of Muscle Shoals; son, Dale E. Smith ,of Tampa, Florida; granddaughter, Kira Semanas, of Flagstaff, Arizona; and sisters, Mae Gotcher, Mavis Hillyard, and Karen Beaver, all of Muscle Shoals.
Pallbearers are Jeff Austin, Brent Austin, Paul Tolbert, Mike Hillyard, Wayne Beaver, and Henry Gotcher.
Honorary pallbearers are the men of Highland Park Baptist Church Emmitt Derrick, John Austin, Billy Craft, Jackie Walker, Scott Parker, Nickolas Parker, Brett Bennett, and Jessie Hamm.
Memorials may be made to the Colbert Caring Center or the Gideon’s.
