TUSCUMBIA-Dozens of beautiful quilts, along with the history of how they were made, will be on display this fall at the Tennessee Valley Museum of Art. The exhibition From These Threads: Cotton Culture will be on view from October 1 through November12.
The museum is also inviting community members to share photos of their own family quilts.
Cotton in the South has a long, rich, and complicated past. From These Threads: Cotton Culture will offer visitors the opportunity to travel through some of the history of cotton, its production, and its use in the creation of quilts over the past 190 years. The exhibit will feature historical quilts dating from the 1830s through contemporary pieces created by today’s quilt artists. The quilts are drawn from private collections in the area.
The museum is also asking community members to share photos and stories of their own family quilts. Some of those quilts will be shared to the museum’s Facebook and Instagram pages. If you’d like to participate, email the following information to ellie.pettus@tennesseevalleyarts.org:
- Your name
- The name of the quilt maker
- Description and history of the quilt (no more than 150 words)
- Your Instagram handle (if applicable)
- Link to Facebook profile (if applicable)
- Photos of the quilt and, if available, photo of the quilt maker or family photo related to the quilt
Hours for the Tennessee Valley Museum of Art are Tuesday-Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students, and free for members. Admission is also free for education, healthcare, and first responder workers, as part of the Arts for the Frontline program, sponsored by Bank Independent and E.S. Robbins.
