Potential Business Start-up to be Discussed at Information Session: “Doing Business in Tuscumbia”

TUSCUMBIA-The Small Business Development Center of the University of North Alabama has joined forces with Tuscumbia Retail Development, Inc.  to offer a seminar through which potential entrepreneurs may gain insight into the steps for starting a new business.  The information session will last about an hour and is set for Thursday, February 28, at 5:30 p.m. at Fiddledee D! 111 South Main Street, Tuscumbia.  The City of Tuscumbia is co-sponsoring the event, during which resource materials will be provided and questions will be answered.  Information on available commercial sites in Tuscumbia will be shared as well as cooperative opportunities for start-up businesses. Light refreshments will be served. The event is free.

The mission of the Alabama Small Business Development Center of UNA is to strengthen Alabama’s economy by providing high-quality one-on-one confidential assistance, training and education to small businesses.  It targets increasing employment, fostering growth and improving financial stability.  The SBDC  been offering advice to current and prospective business owners since 1980.

Tuscumbia Retail Development, Inc. is a volunteer, non-profit foundation, organized to grow retail businesses in the City of Tuscumbia.  In addition to sponsoring various community events, TRD operates a retail cooperative shop (Fiddledee D!), which has offered an incubator program for individual small businesses to join in shared sales effort since 2010. Recently, a second business incubator,  has been announced and is welcomed to the family of businesses in historic downtown Tuscumbia. Information on both ways to participate in shared start-up opportunities will be available at the session.

May Woodie Christopher, president of TRD, said that often those who have a dream to start a business, really just don’t know where to begin.  “We hope that this information program will answer the questions that they may have and will calm their fears!  Opening a business does not have to be hard and it can be done affordably.  We can help you take the first step.

We have a collection of shops and restaurants that have the potential to draw people from all over the nearby region and even from far away.  The Helen Keller Home and Spring Park are among a variety of  tourist destinations, located right here in our downtown. It is the ideal place to locate a new business, with great potential for success.”

Fiddledee D! acts as an information welcome center for the town.  Tourist information is available within the shop for visitors.
