Polly Caperton Hughes, after having lived 105 years, passed away on Friday, July 4, 2025, at Bailey Manor in Winchester. A native of Franklin County, she was born in Cowan on August 5, 1919, to the late Thomas and Maude (Snelson) Caperton. Polly spent twenty-five years as the owner and operator of Polly Hughes Personnel Services in Nashville, where she trained ladies to enter the workforce and prepared them to help support themselves and their families. Professionally, she received several business awards in Nashville including Businesswoman of the Year and Woman Entrepreneur Award. During this time, she also served on the boards of PBS and Opryland. Polly always loved and missed her beloved home, Cowan and was eager to return home. She loved her church, Cowan Fellowship Church, where she worshipped for 105 years, having started attending as a baby. When she was able, Polly enjoyed cooking and gardening, as well as knitting and stained glass making. She also enjoyed reading and playing Bridge and Rummy Tile in her leisure time. Her loving and caring nature, along with her “firecracker” personality, allowed her to earn many friends along the way…and she always wanted everyone included! In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Mitchell Hughes; and siblings, Mildred Caperton Thompson, Tommy Caperton Galloway, and William Caperton. Polly is survived by her nieces, Rachel Lynn Thompson, Susan Caperton (Michael) Holbrook, Virginia Caperton, and Nicole Feltner; nephews, Lawrence Franklin (Robin) Thompson, Mike Caperton, Gene Galloway, and Thomas Allen Galloway; and several great-nieces, great-nephews, and extended family members. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, July 11, 2025, at Cowan Montgomery Cemetery with Andy Gay and Jerry Stewart officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Cowan Commercial Club for the beautification of Cowan.
