Police Officer Injured…One Man Arrested

FLORENCE-A Florence Police Officer responded to a wreck near Jackson Road and Cox Creek Parkway and was injured by the driver.  Here is how the Florence Police describe the event:

“A Florence Officer was injured, a local man has been jailed.  A Florence Police Officer is recovering from his injuries this morning after being attacked by a man suspected of DUI. Florence police officer John Byrd received stitches following the incident at ECM hospital. Reports show that officers responded to a wreck call near the intersection of Jackson Road and Cox Creek Parkway earlier this morning. Officers arrived at the scene and the driver of the car fled into a wooded area. Jeffery Wade Martin, 53, of Florence was found hiding a short time later and was transported to ECM Hospital for evaluation. While at ECM, Martin is accused of attacking Officer Byrd, striking him several times in the face. Byrd sustained injuries to his face and was treated and released. Martin was charged with Assault 2nd on a Police Officer, DUI, UPCS, Attempting to Elude, and Resisting Arrest. He is being held in the LCDC on bond totaling $9,000 US.
