ATHENS-Poke Sallet Follies kicks off tonight at 7 p.m. at the Athens Senior Center on Pryor Street. The show will continue Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.

The show features the Prime Time Players, a group of not-so-talented local leaders and local people who are somewhat talented. The show started in 1993 as a fundraiser for the Limestone County Foundation for Aging. Harriette Rost, her husband, the late Tom Rost, Helen Carter, Martha Jo Leonard and the late Mary Thompson devised the Follies as a spring production where civic and community leaders performed wild antics in various skits. Harriette Rost came up with the name Poke Sallet as a play on words for the Southern dish polk salad that grows wild in the spring, just like the production.

This year’s theme is “Athens Choice Awards” and we will have “paparazzi” taking pictures of our guests as they arrive. Skits this year include a spoof of the song Rapper’s Delight (photo attached), a spoof of the Hospice of Limestone County Chili Challenge, and a skit with the song Uptown Funk that requires a lot of coordination.
