Philip Morton Southall, age 84, died on Friday afternoon October 19, 2018 after a short battle with brain cancer. He was surrounded by his wonderful family, as he would have wished. Born in Florence, Alabama, he was the son of the late Charles Morton Southall and Katherine King Southall. Philip enjoyed a huge extended family and was close to them all of his life. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy Preparatory School, Harvard University and was graduated from Vanderbilt University. He received advanced degrees from the University of Tennessee medical school in medical microbiology and the University of Memphis in psychology.

Philip was the true renaissance man in that he relished life and was interested in all things. He excelled at sailing, flying, tennis, and pickleball. He loved reading, theater, music, travel, and visiting family and friends. Philip’s quick wit and hearty laugh will be missed.

He is survived by Julie, his wife of 52 years; his daughter Sherrod and her husband Tim of Raleigh, North Carolina; his son Morton and his wife Stephanie of Nashville, Tennessee; Tyler, Spencer, Mason, Gray and Madding, his five most excellent grandchildren and his beloved dog Edsel.

Philip requested that his body be donated to The Genesis Project (MERI), an international medical research facility in Memphis, Tennessee.
