SHEFFIELD — City Council candidate Penny Freeman is calling for the development of a comprehensive internship program that would span all departments of the City of Sheffield, aiming to reshape the way residents — especially young people — view careers in local government.
“Most people think working for the city means being a police officer, firefighter, utility worker, or answering phones behind a desk,” Freeman said. “While those jobs are essential, they only scratch the surface of what’s possible.”
Freeman’s proposed initiative would open the doors of city government to students and residents with a wide range of talents and interests — from copy editing and journalism, to mass communication, design, and public engagement.
“Our city needs people with interpersonal skills, creativity, and communication expertise,” she added. “Whether your passion is writing, photography, planning, or working with people, there’s a place for your gifts right here in Sheffield.”
The program would offer real-world experience across departments, helping participants understand the inner workings of local government while building a future pipeline of community-minded professionals.
“This is about more than internships,” Freeman said. “It’s about showing our youth that their skills matter — and that they don’t have to leave home to find purpose and opportunity.”
Freeman’s proposal aligns with her campaign platform of fostering civic pride, creating homegrown talent pipelines, and building a stronger, more inclusive Sheffield.
