Mrs. Peggy Ruth Ritter Estes, 86, departed her earthly life at Baptist Hospital-Union County, and was reunited with her Heavenly Father, Sunday, September 27, 2026 after a brief illness. She was born February 27, 1940 in Lee County, Mississippi to George and Ruby Brazeal Ritter. Peggy was a graduate of Itawamba Junior College (currently ICC) where she earned her nursing degree as an LPN. She retired from North MS Medical Center after 26 years as a nurse. She loved her job and helping others. She was a mother, wife, grandmother and great-grandmother, nurse, Sunday school teacher, sister and aunt to many. Most people related or knew her simply as “Mom Peg”. She often greeted everyone with “Hey Sweet”. She loved working in her flowers and cooking.
After Peggy and the love of her life, Jerry Estes, retired in 2005, they joined Campers on Mission and served faithfully for 25 years. Her greatest accomplishment in life was accepting Christ, being a mother to her children and a loving wife to Jerry. One thing she wanted to pass on to her family is to be a Christian and live like one, AKA “Do Right”. She wants her family to remember her for the love she had for them. She loved living and now she will live forever. Her favorite verse in the Bible was Philippians 4:13 – “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”.
A celebration of Peggy’s life and home-going will be at 2 PM, Friday, October 2, 2026 in the Sadie Holland Memorial Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with Bro. Kerry Powell and Bro. Chuck Hampton, and Bro. Danny Rushing officiating. A private family graveside service will follow at Doty Chapel Cemetery with Bro. Danny Rushing officiating. Visitation will be from 12 noon to service time Friday, all at the funeral home. A fellowship meal for family and friends will follow the graveside service at Shannon First Baptist Church.
Peggy is survived by her loving husband of 38 years, Jerry Estes of Shannon; children, Pam Holley, Kim (Marsha) Herndon, Lasonia (Alex) Jones, Jeff (Angie) Estes and Kristi (Randy) Lindley; grandchildren; Casey (Gary) Poole, Dawn Herndon, Kayla (Jason) Bryant, Matt (Courtenay) Herndon, Wes Jones, Elizabeth Estes, Cady (Justin) Waite, Morgan (Wesley) Gillentine, Cooper Lindley and Corbin Lindley; sisters, Marie Whitt, Carolyn (David) Powell and Marilyn (Walter) Burns; brother, Johnny (Carol) Young; sisters-in-law, Linda Hood and Barbara Young; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her grandparents; Will and Lucy Towery Ritter and Travis and Alice Sullins Brazeal; parents, George and Ruby Brazeal Ritter; brothers, Buddy (wife – Pat) Young and Russell Young; Charlene Tomlin and Jimmie Ann Layman; brothers-in-law, Jerry Whitt, James Swindle and Robert Leon Estes; nephew, Kevin Powell; and niece, Polly Young.
Pallbearers will be Gary Poole, Jason Bryant, Randy Lindley, Wes Jones, Matt Herndon and Cooper Lindley. Honorary Pallbearers will be Corbin Lindley, Alex Jones, Jeff Estes, Wesley Gillentine and all of her many nephews.
The family expresses a special thank you to her wonderful caregivers, Glenda Brand, Sha Brand, and Gloria Bogan.
