Peggy Joyce Rainey Speake, was born in Decatur, Alabama on May 19, 1924 to Eddie and Ruth Rainey. She had one brother, Marion Rainey (deceased), and sister-in-law, Lauren and two nephews Ted Rainey and Allan Rainey of Atlanta Georgia. She was mother to Deborah Speake Schuknecht Flemming, John Gregory Speake (deceased) and Harold Nelson Speake (deceased). She was a beloved mother-in-law to June Reid Speake. She had five grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 5 great, great grandchildren.

Peggy was a caring and loving person to many. She was a member of Central Methodist Church, a Girl Scout Leader, Pilot Club officer, Senior Center canasta coordinator and ARC volunteer who was honored with a plaque for Volunteer of the Year. She was a lifelong Alabama Football and Atlanta Braves fan.

Blindness in her 70s didn’t slow her down as an angel on earth, Shirley Phariss helped her see the world in a different light! The Speakes will be forever grateful to Shirley and all of Peggy’s friends who gave her life joy and happiness as she struggled through physical limitations!

Peggy passed away on Monday, October 9 At Riverside Retirement Home which is the same building that housed Riverside high school which she graduated from many years before!

Her visitation will be on Thursday October 12, 2023 at 10:00 am with a service at 11:00 am at Ridout’s Brown-Service chapel and burial at Decatur city cemetery.

Special thanks to Hospice of the Valley for providing loving care, support and peace in her last days on earth. Also, thank-you to those who came to love and care for her at Riverside.
