Peggy Birchfield Mason passed away peacefully at the age of 91, on March 31, 2026, at South Hampton Health and Rehab in Owens Cross Roads.

Peggy was born October 20, 1934, in Langdale, AL, the eldest of two children of Loomis and Rudell Birchfield.

She graduated from Valley High School in Fairfax, AL. She went on to study business, graduating with a diploma in Business Administration from Perry Business College in Columbus, GA.

Her career began in the office of the machine shop at Langdale Mill in Langdale, AL. Following her time at the mill, she went on to manage traffic for a commercial radio station in West Point, GA, a position she held for over 10 years. From there, she made her way to Redstone Arsenal, where she served as personal secretary to the chairman of Panel V of NATO. She later went on to serve as personal secretary to a General at the base, where she remained until her retirement. She was a secretary from the ‘old school’, who saw to it that everything that needed doing got done, and on time.

After retirement, she volunteered for numerous local civic organizations. She also volunteered at the South Precinct of the Huntsville Police Department for many years. She enjoyed reading books, working puzzles, and travel.

She was predeceased by James, her spouse of 66 years, her sister, Glenda, and her parents. She is survived by her son, James III (Vincent) of Portugal; her honorary daughter, Rebecca (Kerry) Robinson of Huntsville; brother-in-law, James Pitts of Valley, AL; sisters-in-law, Betty Mason of Valley, AL, and Elaine (Tommy) Smith of LaGrange, GA; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and those close to her who thought of her as their grandmother.

She will be deeply missed by all whose lives she touched.

At her request, no formal service will be held.
