On November 18, 2023, Mrs. Patty Montgomery Atherton passed away in Huntsville, AL. She would most definitely not want us to mention her age. She is survived by her children; Robert Atherton (Lee), John Atherton (Angela), and daughter Melony Atherton Maughan (Phil); grandchildren, Emily Atherton Randall (Joe), Cassie Atherton Knight (Ed), Madalyn Atherton, Emma Pullen, and Mason and Sam Maughan (Grace Anne) and one great-grandchild, Ward Knight. Mrs. Atherton is also survived by her loving brothers, Paul Montgomery (Charlcie) and Jack Montgomery (Jennie) along with numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years, Jim Atherton, in 2019. The family would like to thank Redstone Village, Thrive Senior Living, and Inisclee Hale for their loving care and compassion during her last years with us.
Patty was born in Decatur, AL to Homer and Viola Montgomery. She graduated from Morgan County High School where she was a majorette. She went on to study at Judson College, eventually graduating from Montevallo in 1960. She remained a proud and active alumna of Judson College, receiving the Outstanding Alumna Award in 2016.
She and her husband, Jim, were married in 1961 and were active members of First Baptist Church, Huntsville, their entire married lives. They invested countless hours teaching and mentoring youth, young adults, young marrieds, and anyone else who crossed their path that needed a friend or just a little help. Our mother was the consummate hostess and cook…and one of the most thoughtful and giving people we ever knew. There are not enough words to explain what she has meant to us and her many, many friends. We will miss her every single day.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, November 21, 2023 from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. in the chapel at First Baptist Church followed by a celebration of her life at 2:00 p.m.
