The Honorable Patricia Sue Bryant McGuire

May 9, 1945 – October 20, 2026

The Honorable Patricia Sue Bryant McGuire, age 81, of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, passed away on October 20, 2026, leaving behind a lasting legacy of faith, family, friendship, and distinguished public service.

Born May 9, 1945, in Lawrenceburg, Patty was the daughter of the late Calvin Coolidge Bryant, Sr., and Jewell Marie Butler Bryant. Raised with strong Christian values and deep roots in Lawrence County, she carried those traditions throughout her life.

After graduating from Lawrence County High School, she earned a law degree at UT in 1970 and a degree from MTSU. In 1971, she became the first female attorney to practice law in Lawrence County.

Patty began her career in private practice and in 1974 became the first woman to serve as Lawrence County Attorney, a position she held for 12 years. In 1986, she joined the District Attorney General’s Office for Tennessee’s 22nd Judicial District, serving for 18 years.

In August 2004, Patty fulfilled a lifelong dream when she became the first female General Sessions Judge in Lawrence County. She subsequently won two elections and presided over General Sessions, Probate, and Juvenile Courts. Throughout her career, she was respected for her intelligence, integrity, fairness, and dedication to justice. She also served as President of the Lawrence County Bar Association and held leadership roles within the legal profession.

While Patty’s professional accomplishments were extraordinary, her greatest pride and joy were always her family. She was a devoted mother to her only son, Howard Curtis “Curt” McGuire, Jr., and a loving grandmother to Rob (Haley) and Analise McGuire, whom she affectionately described as “the joy of my life.”

Despite being divorced after 22 years of marriage, Huck McGuire remained her life-long friend and best campaign manager.

Her faith, family values, and belief in honesty, integrity, and service guided her throughout her life. She was the former republican county chair and a member of Pulaski Street Church of Christ. Outside the courtroom, she enjoyed spending her time gardening and politicking.

In a personal reflection on her life, Patty wrote: “I have had a truly blessed and happy life.”

Patty was preceded in death by her parents, Calvin Coolidge Bryant, Sr., and Jewell Marie Butler Bryant.

She is survived by her beloved son, Howard Curtis “Curt” McGuire, Jr. and his long time fiancé, Kristine Kenworthy; her cherished grandchildren, Rob (Haley) and Analise McGuire; her brothers, Bill Bryant and Jack Bryant; along with nieces, nephews, extended family members, and many dear friends.

Those serving as pallbearers are Calvin Bryant (Jonna), Chris Bryant, Tanner Bryant (Gina), Tucker Bryant, and Rob McGuire (Hayley).

Those serving as honorary pallbearers are Huck McGuire, Jack Bryant, and Bill Bryant.

Judge Patricia Sue Bryant McGuire will be remembered not only for the history she made, but for the faith she lived, the family she loved, and the lasting example of strength, integrity, and service she leaves behind.
