Oscar “Shorty” Sims, Jr. – Obituary

Mr. Oscar “Shorty” Sims, Jr. age 89, a resident of Columbia, previously of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Saturday, March 17, 2018 at Maury Regional Medical Center.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 4PM at Heritage Funeral Home with Mark Henderson officiating. Military honors will be provided by the United States Army. Inurment will follow the service in the Garden of Freedom in Maury Memorial Gardens, adjacent to Heritage Funeral Home. A visitation will also be held on Thursday from 2-4PM at the funeral home. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Born on October 7, 1928 in Green Hill, Alabama, Oscar was the son of the late Oscar Sims, Sr. and the late Minnie Jane Steagall Sims. He served his country in the United States Army and previously worked as an electrician all over the state of Tennessee. He was a steward for the Local #429 electrical union. Oscar had a great sense of humor and was always cutting up and cracking jokes. He never met a stranger and lived his life to the fullest. He enjoyed the outdoors, including hunting and fishing. Most recently, he loved to read and was very interested in watching and reading about politics. Most of all, Oscar loved his family and getting together with them for special occasions. He especially loved his special friends at Waffle House and Community First Bank in Neely’s Mill where he visited daily.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his daughter: Teresa Walters of Columbia; sister: Ethel Howell of Alabama; granddaughter: Tiffany (Lance) Boyd of Mt. Pleasant; great grandchildren: Morgan Boyd of Columbia, Markham Boyd of Mt. Pleasant, Mathin Boyd of Mt. Pleasant, Mia Boyd of Mt. Pleasant, Molly Boyd of Mt. Pleasant; great great grandchildren: Barret Potts and Abi Jo Potts; best buddy: Bill Flowers of Centerville; and several nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Jo Ann Brunson Sims; and siblings: Rufus Sims, Lillian Sims, Walter Sims, Hazel Sims, Belton Sims, Inez Sharpton, and Nina Lancaster.
