Oscar Dale Gardner, 74, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, passed away on Tuesday, August 25th, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family and friends. He was born on February 17, 1952, in Louisville, Kentucky, and lived a life marked by faith, family, service, coaching, and an unwavering commitment to the people he loved.
Oscar was a proud graduate of Valley High School, Class of 1970, where he was a member of the Valley Vikings football team. His love of football continued into college, where he played collegiate football at the University of Indianapolis. His accomplishments on the field earned him induction into the University of Indianapolis Hall of Fame in 2001, and he remains the university’s second all-time leading tackler.
His passion for football extended well beyond his playing days. Oscar served as an assistant football coach at Doss High School in Louisville, Kentucky, and later head coached at Breckinridge County High School from 1976 to 1980. He went on to become the head football coach at Manchester Central High School in Manchester, Tennessee, from 1981 to 1985. Through coaching, Oscar had the opportunity to influence countless young people, teaching them not only about football, but also about discipline, perseverance, character, and the importance of being part of a team. He eventually left his coaching career and pursued a career in financial planning until he retired.
Oscar’s greatest calling, however, was his faith. He was a devoted member of Northside Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He taught high school boys and also taught adult Sunday school classes, sharing his faith and wisdom with generations of church members. He was a member of the Northside Baptist Church choir and participated in numerous Romanian mission trips, a ministry that became one of the great passions of his life. His commitment to serving others extended far beyond his local community, and he cherished the relationships and memories made through those mission trips.
Oscar also had a wonderful sense of humor and a gift for bringing joy to others. For many years, he portrayed “Mack the Sheriff” in Northside’s Toy Store play. In that role, Oscar brought laughter and happiness not only to his fellow cast members but also to the many people who came to watch the production. His ability to make people smile was one of the many qualities that made him so special.
In 2004 and again in 2006, Oscar ran campaigns for the Tennessee House of Representatives, meeting and talking with people throughout Middle Tennessee. His campaigns reflected his genuine desire to connect with people and serve his community.
Above all else, Oscar was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend, coach, teacher, and servant of God. He was affectionately known as “Big O” to his loved ones. He shared 54 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Sherry, building a life filled with love, faith, family, and countless memories.
Oscar is survived by his wife, Sherry Gardner, of 54 years; his son, Matthew Gardner, and daughter-in-law, Retta Gardner; his daughter, Emily McDonald, and son-in-law, Benny McDonald; and his beloved grandchildren, Mackenzie McDonald, Ella Gardner, and Madison Frame, and her husband, Ethan Frame.
Oscar’s legacy will live on in the lives of the young athletes he coached, the students he taught, the church family he served, the friends he made throughout his life, and, most of all, in the family he loved so deeply.
He leaves behind a life of service and a testimony of faith that will not soon be forgotten. His family takes comfort in knowing that the love, laughter, wisdom, and faith he shared with others will continue through the generations.
He was a husband who loved deeply, a father who gave generously, a grandfather who cherished his family, a coach who believed in his players, and a servant who answered God’s call. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Visitation with the family will be at Northside Baptist Church, Murfreesboro on Saturday, August 29, 2026, from 12:00 pm until the time of funeral services beginning at 2:00 pm with Rev. Ken Polk officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery with family and friends serving as pallbearers.
