MORGAN COUNTY-“Operation Safe Summer, 2016” was conducted over the last month by the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office Special Victim’s Unit with assistance of multiple agencies :

“A county wide sex offender verification roundup called “Operation Safe Summer, 2016” was conducted for all registered sex offenders living or working in Morgan County.

This roundup was sponsored by the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office Special Victim’s Unit, with the assistance of multiple agencies, along with the Morgan County deputies, the Decatur Police Department, the Alabama Board of Pardons and Parole (State Probation), the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency and the United States Marshal’s Service.

Residential verification’s were conducted throughout the county to ensure the public that Morgan County convicted sexual offenders were in compliance with the Alabama Registration and Notification law. The process included verifying residential, employment and administrative requirements.

The main focus of this operation was to ensure that those offenders prohibited were not living with children and were in compliance, according to the Alabama Criminal and Sentencing Statutes related to Sex Offender Registration (SORNA). All sex offender residences were visited to ensure there was not a situation that needed attention.

Warrants will be obtained and investigations began on those who were not in compliance.

On July 14, 2016 Morgan County Special Victims Unit Investigators, along with US Marshal’s, executed (2) warrants. There are still (4) outstanding warrants to be executed on offenders that have left Morgan County.

Edward Philip Hillis, of Lacey’s Spring, and Quatez Garner, of Danville, were both arrested for violating the SORNA Adult Sex Offender Identification requirements.”
