MADISON COUNTY – On Saturday, Nov. 9, at the request of the Huntsville Police
Department, Special Agents with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) State
Bureau of Investigation (SBI) launched an investigation into an officer‐involved shooting
involving an officer with the Huntsville Police Department.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:15 p.m. when a verbal altercation ensued between several individuals at a
restaurant, Twin Peaks located in the 5000 Block of University Drive in Huntsville. The suspect, Jeremiah
Matkins, 21, of Huntsville, discharged a firearm, fatally wounding Ray’shun Markelle Bates, 23,
of Decatur. Two other individuals were injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment.
A uniformed Huntsville Police Department officer was working a departmentally approved off-
duty security job for the business when the shooting occurred. The officer discharged his
weapon; however, no individuals were struck by the officer’s gunfire.
Matkins was arrested and officially charged with Murder. He has been booked into the Madison
County Jail with a $50,000 bond.
Nothing further is available as the investigation is ongoing. Once complete, the findings will be
turned over to the Madison County District Attorney’s Office.
