ATHENS-The Athens Police Department made an arrest in a Theft of Property case on Friday, April 17th. Here is how Police Chief Floyd Johnson describes the events leading up to the arrest of one suspect:
“On March 24, 2014 the police department received a complaint of a possible theft that had occurred between November 2014 and March of 2015. The victim in this case is an elderly female that needed help in overseeing her banking account. She asked a family member to help her and she placed him on her account. She told him she had not received a bank statement in several months. The family member got to checking and was able to find two checks and numerous withdrawals had been made from the account without the owner’s permission. Investigator Brett Constable started working with the victim and her family. He was able to determine there was $6350.00 missing from the account and that a neighbor of the victim had been receiving her mail. After talking with the neighbor Constable obtained a Theft of property 1st degree warrant for Sherry Carthen. She was arrested on the warrant Friday afternoon. Carthen was booked at the police department and transferred to the county jail. The investigation in this case is continuing and more charges are possible.”
