COLBERT COUNTY-The Colbert County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call of a stolen vehicle on Sunday, October 5, 2014. Here is how Sheriff Ronnie May describe the events leading up to the arrest:
“Sherita Lanette Abernathy, age 32, of 6505 Highway 20, Leighton, Alabama her bond has been set at $10,000.
On 10-5-14 the Sheriff”s Office received a theft report. While visiting a friend on jJarmon Lane the victim’s car, a 2005 grey Mercury, was stolen from the driveway. The approximate value of the car was $13,000. When the victim went outside a witness told him that Sherita Abernathy had taken the car. The victim and witness got into a vehicle and located then followed Abernathy in the victims car. The victim called the Sheriff’s office and deputies were dispatched. Deputies Kumse and Carmack attempted to stop Abernathy as she traveled south on County Line Road towards Leighton. While attempting to get away from the deputies Abernathy lost control of the car and wrecked near the intersection of 6th Street. Abernathy was taken into custody and transported to the County Jail.
On 10-6-14 Abernathy was interviewed by Investigators. She stated that she was smoking crack when she took the car. Abernathy stated the reason she did not stop for deputies was that she was still smoking crack as she drove then wrecked the car.
On 10-7-14 the Invs’ discussed the facts of the case with the D.A.s office and a warrant was issued for Abernathy. She is still in jail.”
