My Life Without Ranch: A Roller Coaster Journey to Self-Worth

Heather Wyatt, author and University of Alabama English Instructor, will visit FLPL for a book talk/signing for her essay collection My Life Without Ranch: A Roller Coaster Journey to Self-Worth. This event will be in the Reading Room on the 2nd floor of the library.

My Life Without Ranch is a fun, unique self-help book for today’s generation. This humorous collection of essays lets readers know that healthy body image and self-esteem are matters of mindset—not willpower. When it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, there are no easy answers, and weight and size do not determine self-worth.

While most self-help books about weight and body image emphasize the destination, author Heather Wyatt focuses on the journey. At the end of the day, this book is a conversation, a way of saying, “Y’all, me too, I get it! You aren’t bad the way you are right now, right this second. You’re pretty freaking awesome, actually” Wyatt will have readers crying tears of laughter and relief. And as a special bonus, delicious, fun recipes can be found at the end of each chapter!

Heather Wyatt is an English instructor at the University of Alabama by day and a food TV junkie by night. She’s obsessed with her two dogs and likes orange flavored drinks. Her essays, poems, and short stories have appeared in multiple publications. She received her Bachelor’s degree in American Studies from the University of Alabama and her MFA in Poetry from Spalding University in Louisville, KY. A Cosmology of Monsters by Shaun Hamill
Saturday, October 19, 1:00 pm
Florence-Lauderdale Public Library

Shaun Hamill will visit FLPL this October to talk about his debut novel, A Cosmology of Monsters, just in time for Halloween. The horror master himself, Stephen King, said of the book:
“Shaun Hamill’s A Cosmology of Monsters brilliantly combines the mythos of H.P. Lovecraft with a contemporary story of a family under threat of destruction from supernatural forces. It succeeds because these are good, likeable people that we root for; they could be our neighbors. Horror only works when we care for the people involved, and because we care for the Turners, their nightmare becomes ours. Hamill’s prose is simple, and simply beautiful. If John Irving ever wrote a horror novel, it would be something like this. I loved it, and think you will, too.”

Books will be available to purchase at the event.

About the book:
Noah Turner sees monsters.

His father saw them—and built a shrine to them with The Wandering Dark, an immersive horror experience that the whole family operates.

His practical mother has caught glimpses of terrors but refuses to believe—too focused on keeping the family from falling apart.

And his eldest sister, the dramatic and vulnerable Sydney, won’t admit to seeing anything but the beckoning glow of the spotlight . . . until it swallows her up.

Noah Turner sees monsters. But, unlike his family, Noah chooses to let them in.

About the author:
Shaun Hamill is a native of Arlington, Texas and holds an MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. He lives in the dark woods of Alabama with his wife, his in-laws, and his dog.
