Kailey Armstrong nominated as Players of the Week in ACCC

MUSCLE SHOALS & PHIL CAMPBELL, ALA. — The Northwest-Shoals Community College (NW-SCC) softball program continued its pre-conference schedule with six games February 13-19.

NW-SCC freshman shortstop Kailey Armstrong of Leighton was nominated as the ACCC Player of the Week. For the week ending February 19, Armstrong had a batting average of .389, two home runs, five RBI, two walks, three stolen bases and six runs scored.
On February 14, the Patriots hosted Northeast Mississippi Community College (NEMCC) for a doubleheader at the University of North Alabama Softball Complex. NEMCC swept the two games, 13-2 and 12-2.
In game one, Kailey Armstrong went 1-2 with a home run, run scored and two RBI to lead the Patriots’ offense. Chloe Handley went 1-2 with a stolen base and run scored.
Handley pitched 4.1 innings and Mycala Mitchell came on in relief.
In game two, Taylor Cameron pitched 4.1 innings with five strikeouts for NW-SCC. Brooklyn Owens pitched the final 2.2 innings, striking out two batters among the 18 she faced.
Handley went 2-4 and Stefanie Price was 2-3 with a double and one RBI to lead the Patriot offense.
On Saturday, February 18, the Patriots traveled to Booneville, Miss., to compete in the Tiger Fest. In the first of two games the Patriots played, they faced Spoon River College from Canton, Ill., and lost 5-3.
Cameron pitched a complete game for NW-SCC, scattering five hits, eight strikeouts, two walks while giving up only two earned runs over seven innings.
Cameron was assisted by a strong defense behind her, with Brown and Carley Hunter each turning double plays.
Armstrong went 3-4 at the plate, with a double, a run scored, one RBI and two stolen bases. Brumley and Handley each had one RBI for the Patriots.
The Patriots faced the host team, Northeast Mississippi Community College (NEMCC), in game two, an 18-4 loss that saw NEMCC batters rack up 14 hits in four innings.
Armstrong had a multi-hit game, going 2-3 with a run scored and a stolen base, to lead the Patriots’ offense. Handley, Owens (2) and Katie Dawson accounted for four RBI among them.
On February 19, NW-SCC hosted Lake Land College (LLC) from Pana, Il. in a doubleheader at Muscle Shoals’ Gattman Park.
In game one, the Lakers handed the Patriots a 9-6 loss.
Six Patriot batters had hits, led by Price and Madalyn Scott, who each went 2-4 with an RBI. Armstrong had a HR and Brown had two RBI.
Cameron pitched 4.1 innings of six-hit softball, giving up three earned runs and striking out five.
Game two also went the Lakers’ way, as they topped the Patriots 16-3.
Scott was a perfect 3-3 with a double and two RBI to lead the Patriots at the plate.
Mitchell was the fourth of four NW-SCC pitchers in the game, and she posted 2.1 innings, giving up two hits, no runs and striking out two.
