Northwest-Shoals softball game recap for the week ending March 19

MUSCLE SHOALS & PHIL CAMPBELL – After four losses to start last week, the Northwest-Shoals Community College (NW-SCC) Patriots softball team closed the week of March 14-19 with a doubleheader sweep over Southern Union State Community College, 7-6 and 4-2.
On March 18th, Coach Angel Brown’s Patriots hosted Southern Union State in Florence at the University of North Alabama softball complex.
Game one saw NW-SCC win in walk-off fashion with Courtney McGraw’s double scoring Jade Roberson to give the Patriots a 7-6 win in seven innings. McGraw was 2-4 with one RBI. Other offensive contributors included Chloe Handley (2-4, 2 RBI, 2 runs scored), Brooklyn Brown (3-4, RBI), Madalyn Scott (2-3, run scored) and Ava Brumley (2-3, run scored).

Cameron nominated as Pitcher of the Week in ACCC

strikeouts in seven innings.

The Patriots finished the sweep with a 4-2 win in game two.
Mycala Mitchell threw seven strong innings, scattering eight hits, four walks and three strikeouts while giving up only two earned runs.
Scott went 1-2, driving in two runs and Handley and Katie Dawson (2-3, Double, run scored) each had one RBI.
The two wins over Southern Union came two days after the Bison swept the Patriots in a home doubleheader on March 16th.
The Bison won game one 6-0 in spite of a strong pitching performance by Cameron. The freshman pitcher threw six innings of five-hit softball, giving up only two walks while striking out six.
Southern Union won a close one in game two, a 6-5 victory for the Bison.
The Patriot offense was led by Armstrong, who went 3-5 with two doubles and two runs scored. Other Patriots with multi-hit games included Owens (2-3, two RBI) and Brown (2-4, RBI).
Mitchell pitched six innings, giving up six runs on eight hits, two walks with four strikeouts.
The Patriots lost a doubleheader against Calhoun Community College on March 14th by scores of 5-4 and 7-3.
Although Cameron gave up five earned runs in 5.1 innings, she had a personal game best 10 strikeouts of Calhoun batters.

McGraw nominated as Player of the Week in ACCC

Emily Ahonen went 3-4 with one RBI and McGraw drove in three runs with a bases-clearing double.

In the 7-3 loss, Ahonen stayed hot at the plate, going 3-4 with a double, run scored and one RBI. McGraw was 2-4 with a double, triple and one RBI and Roberson went 2-3 with a double.
Brown’s nominee for ACCC Player of the Week was Courtney McGraw, who batted .333 with five doubles and a triple, five RBI, a slugging percentage of .667 and a walk-off double to beat Southern Union.
The pitcher of the week nominee was Taylor Cameron, who threw 18.2 innings, faced 91 batters and allowed only 15 hits, with 23 strikeouts. Opponents batted .205 against Cameron for the week.
The Patriots (10-24) will host Wallace State Community College on Thursday, March 30th at the NW-SCC campus for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. The teams will travel to Hanceville for a Saturday doubleheader with first pitch set for 2 p.m.
