Nonna “Lyn” Garrett, 88, passed away August 3, 2024, surrounded by her husband and family at her side.

Lyn Garrett was born September 18, 1936, in Cedar Falls, Iowa to Roy Linwood Gowen and Bernice Ruth Arman Gowen, she was the oldest of five siblings. Lyn graduated from Spencer High School in Spencer, Iowa. Later moving to Omaha, Nebraska where she began her career in the legal field. In 1955 Lyn met and married her husband Hugh Wendell Garrett.

Lyn and Hugh met while she was working in Omaha, Nebraska and Hugh was stationed at Offutt AFB. Lyn spent twenty-seven years supporting Hugh throughout his Air Force career. Many of those years were spent in Nebraska, Japan, Ohio, and Germany. After Hugh’s retirement the family relocated to Prattville, Alabama in the fall of 1978. Her Civil Service career began in 1980 as a paralegal, working for the Judge Advocate Generals Office (JAG) at Maxwell AFB until her retirement in 2003.

She is preceded in death by her parents Roy Linwood Gowen and Bernice Ruth Arman Gowen, brother-in-law Clyde L. Olson, brother Arman Linwood Gowen, and grandson Brice James Brown.

She is survived by her husband of sixty-nine years Hugh Wendell Garrett of Prattville, AL; her children: Catherine Ann Garrett of Pell City, AL., Sharon Kae Garrett Parker (Ernest) of Montgomery, AL., James William Garrett (Wesley) of Caledonia, MS.; grandchildren: Michelle McFerren Brown (Brice), Sarah Jan Brown, Amanda Lyn Parker Ward (Kyle), Wesley Kae Parker Deason (Zachary), Nathan Wendell Garrett, Madison Layne Parker (Preston Perry), Macy Quinn Garrett; great grandchildren: Avery Kathleen Brown, Brooks Alexander Brown, Holden McCoy Brown; sisters: Sue Olson (Clyde) of Des Moines, Iowa, Janet Shahan (Michael) of Venice, Florida, Julie Cochran (Aubrey) of Kannapolis, North Carolina.

Lyn will continue to be remembered as a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, but most importantly she will be remembered for the love she shared with everyone she met. Lyn was a kind soul who enjoyed spending time with her grandkids, shopping for antiques, reading, watching Atlanta Braves Baseball and was an avid Alabama Football Fan, RTR! Lastly, every night she could be found watching Wheel of Fortune at 6:30 p.m. with Hugh and various other family members.

Funeral services are being handled by Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville, Alabama. Funeral to be held on Sunday, August 11, 2024. Visitation to begin at 1:00 p.m. with service to follow at 2:00 p.m. A private interment will take place at the family cemetery in Delta, Alabama.
