A private family graveside service for Nellie Ruth Murrah Counce, 73, will be held Thursday at Oak Grove Cemetery in Iuka.

Nellie died on May 4, 2020 at her residence. She was born on August 28, 1946 to the late Ellis and Marcelle Cox Murrah. She was a 1964 graduate of Iuka High School, 1967 she received her Bachelor of Education with a minor in music from Blue Mountain College and obtained her Masters of Education from University of Mississippi. Until her retirement in 2001 she was an elementary school teacher for 32 years having taught in New Albany, Iuka and Corinth School Systems. She was awarded the Corinth School District Teacher of the Year award in 1997 and Rotary Teacher of the Year in 1998. She was a tutor for the Corinth-Alcorn Literacy Council and member of the Garden Club. She was a member of First Baptist Church and worked in the nursery, children’s department for many years, was a member of the kindergarten committee and sang in the choir.

She is survived by her husband, C.R. “Charlie” Counce; son, C.R. “Chuck” Counce Jr. and wife Jamie; daughter, Ginger Green and husband Dow; grandchildren, Ellis Counce, Ainsley Counce, Samuel Counce, Maggie Green and Brantley Green; sister, Marcia Murrah; sister-in-law, Edna Murrah; and a brother-in-law, Norman Hamm; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Vicky and Micky King.

She was preceded in death by her parents, step-mother, La Velle Murrah, brothers, Alvis and Lloyd Murrah; sister, Libby Hamm and a sister-in-law, Wanda Murrah; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Sonya Counce.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Corinth-Alcorn Literacy Council or to First Baptist Church

Rev. Dennis Smith will officiate the service.
