Nell Springer Hurst – Obituary

NellNell Springer Hurst age 102 of Florence passed away on January 8, 2016. Visitation will be Monday, January 11, 2016 from 11:00 A.M. till 1:00 P.M. at Elkins Funeral Home of Florence. Service to follow at 1:00 P.M. in the chapel with Randy Burbank and Stan Smith officiating. Burial will be at Nebo cemetery in Lexington.

She was preceded in death by her parents Richard and Eudora Lee Putnam. Both of her husbands Jessie “Slick” Springer and Harry Hurst. Sons John Springer and James “Jim” Springer and his wife Elaine Springer. Sisters Mamie P. McCain, Lura P. Haraway, Gladys P. Brown and Alene P. Smith. And a brother Willard Putnam.

Nell is survived by one son Charles Springer of Florence and the wife of the late John Springer, Eda Springer. 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. 14 nephews and 8 nieces.

Nell graduated from Lexington High School, Larimore Business College. She was basketball captain in high school and elected best athlete in Junior and Senior high. For 20 years she was a volunteer worker for RSVP. She was a member of the Lexington Methodist Church before becoming a member of Weeden Heights United Methodist Church where she served as Sunday School teacher for 25 years, also serving on the official board as treasurer and secretary. And as a member of UMW serving as Treasurer for many years. She was a long time member of the adult choir. She retired from the First National Bank after 28 years where she was over the lock box department. Nell enjoyed traveling and camping with family.

Pallbearers will be Chad Springer, Brad Springer, Todd Springer, David Springer, Tim Springer, Dylan McCreless, Cory McCreless and Isaac Springer. Honorary bearers will be Jordon Bush, Chris Ahlf, Jon Springer, Scott Ahlf, Sydney Bush and Austin Littleton.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Gentiva and Amedisys Hospice for their care.
