Neal Ray Dollar, 81, of Florence died Friday, April 10, 2015, at ECM Hospital.
Visitation will be Monday, April 13, 2015, at Elkins Funeral Home Florence from 11 AM
to 12 PM. A memorial service will follow at 12 PM in the Chapel with Brother Jerry Rea
officiating. In accordance to his wishes, he will be honored in a private family gathering
at Buttahatchee Creek at his “boyhood bathtub and playground”.
Mr.Dollar was a lifelong member of Mt.Olive Baptist Church in Hackleburg and
attended Woodmont Baptist Church in Florence after moving back to Alabama.
Mr.Dollar was born in Hackleburg, AL. to Jim and Minnie Dollar. He graduated from
Hackleburg High School where he was senior class president. Mr.Dollar served in the
US Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Bradford. He attended Florence State
where he met the mother of his children, Jane Ann McCorkle.
Mr.Dollar enjoyed a long career in the hospitality industry managing hotels and
restaurants. The pride of his career was owning Wajoman’s Restaurant in Galesburg,
IL. where he formed many lasting friendships. He truly treasured the memories of his
life in Galesburg.
Quite the author, we will miss his eccentric editorials, emails, stories and jokes. In all of
these writings his wit and humor was apparent.
Mr.Dollar is survived by his three daughters, Waverly Ward (Keith), Johanna Dollar, and
Amanda Simpson (Stan); one brother, Carl Dollar (Marilyn) of St. Joseph, Michigan; five
grandchildren, Johanna Kearney (Sean), Kathy Lafferty (Nathan), Veronica Ward,
Camille Greider, and Jacob Greider; seven great-grandchildren, Emma Grace Rosson,
Connor Rosson, Brooke Lafferty, Luke Lafferty, Cameron Kelley, Gavin Kearney,
Declan Kearney; host of nieces, nephews, and close cousins; as well as his Bingo
Buddies and friends at Morningside of Sheffield.
The family wishes to express our gratitude to Dr. Ricky Irons, Dr. Saquib Anjum, Dr.
Robert Webb and the staff of the Oasis Unit and Palliative Care Unit at ECM Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of the Shoals.
