Volunteer-In-Parks Linda tells the story of Meriwether Lewis and the Corps of Discovery at the annual Meriwether Lewis Commemoration along the Natchez Trace.
HOHENWALD, TN – The Natchez Trace Parkway celebrated the life and legacy of Meriwether Lewis at the Meriwether Lewis Death and Burial Site on Saturday, October 13, 2018. National Park Service staff welcomed over 250 visitors to the site to celebrate the historic Natchez Trace and Meriwether Lewis. Programs about the famed explorer were offered throughout the day. “People are still interested in the life of Meriwether Lewis and his journey with William Clark and the Corps of Discovery. This was a great opportunity for us to continue to tell their story” said Park Ranger Andy Danneker.
Meriwether Lewis, then Governor of the Upper Louisiana Territory, was traveling the old Natchez Trace on his way to Washington, DC from St. Louis. He died on October 11, 1809 at Grinder’s Stand, an inn located on the old Natchez Trace, and was buried a few hundred yards away.
