MUSCLE SHOALS-The Muscle Shoals Police Chief Clint Reck released a statement concerning the death of an inmate while in the custody of the Muscle Shoals Police Department on March 11:

“On Saturday, March 11, 2023 Matthew Todd Robbins, 37 of Tuscumbia was found unresponsive in his cell by MSPD Officers performing routine visual checks.  Life saving measures were immediately initiated by MSPD Staff, and emergency medical personnel over took upon their arrival.

Efforts to resuscitate Robbins were unsuccessful.  Robbins was transported by ambulance to Shoals Hospital where he was pronounced deceased by the Colbert County Coroner’s Office.

While the incident is still under investigation, Robbins appeared to expire due to asphyxiation carried out by himself.  Robbins was being housed by himself at the time.

Robbins was brought to the Muscle Shoals Police Department just before 11:00PM on March 10, 2023 after MSPD Officers effected an arrest for Violation for Protection from Abuse (PFA) Order issued by Colbert County Court, as well as resisting arrest.  Upon MSPD Officers discovering Robbins and attempting life saving measures, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) was called in to work the investigation, as standard procedure in such cases.

This matter is still under investigation and further updates will be given by ALEA.”

Sincerely,

Clint Reck, Chief of Police
